Mahjong solitaire: how to play

Playing Mahjong for free here means mahjong solitaire: you clear pairs of matching tiles, not the four-player game. Tap two matching free tiles and they disappear. Clear the whole board to win. The tiles are large and clear, you need no sign-up, and every game can be solved.

How mahjong solitaire works

The board is covered with tiles that show pictures, two of each kind. Tap a free tile, then the one that matches it. Both disappear. When the board is empty, you have won.

Which tiles are free?

A tile is free when nothing lies on top of it and its left or right side is open. If you tap a blocked tile, it wiggles to show it is not free yet.

Levels and layouts

There are 12 layouts, from the small Flower board with 36 tiles to the classic Turtle with 144 tiles. You will also find Heart, Bridge, Diamond, Butterfly, Two towers, Pyramid, Cat head, Fortress, Staircase and Garden pond. The Turtle is made for big screens.

Level 1 is open. The next one opens when you clear a level with at least one star. Stars depend on your time. In relaxed mode there is no clock, and you get at least two stars.

Tips for quick games

  • Clear tall stacks first, so many tiles become free.
  • Take tiles at the far left and right early, they often hold others back.
  • If four matching tiles are free, pick the pair that frees the most tiles.

Every game can be solved

Every board is laid out so that it can be cleared. A move can still lead into a dead end. Then press Shuffle, which is always free. Undo takes back your last move. A hint shows you a free pair and costs a few coins.

Full screen and settings

You play in your browser, on a phone, tablet or computer. The full screen button makes the board even bigger. You can choose how the tiles look, clear and modern or classic, and you can dim blocked tiles.
