Word puzzle: how to play
The daily word puzzle “Word of the day” is a five-letter word game: you guess a hidden English word in six tries. After each try, colours show which letters are right. Type a word, press Enter and keep guessing. It is free and needs no sign-up.
How to play
- Type an English word with five letters, using the on-screen keyboard or your own keyboard.
- Press Enter. The letters change colour.
- Use the colours for your next try.
- After six tries at most, the round is over.
What the colours mean
The keyboard takes the same colours. So you can see which letters you have already tried.
- Correct: the letter is in the right place.
- Wrong place: the letter is in the word, but elsewhere.
- Grey: the letter is not in the word.
Good starting words and tips
Start with a word that has common letters, such as E, A, R or T. That gives you clues right away.
On your second try, pick a word with completely new letters. From the third try on, look for a word that fits all the colours. Expert mode in the settings makes you reuse the clues you found.
Word list
The game uses the letters A to Z. The words to find are hand-picked everyday words that you know. Many more words are accepted as guesses.
A word that is not on the list is turned away and does not cost you a try.
Archive, free play and hint
- In the archive you can catch up on a puzzle from the last 30 days.
- In free play you can guess as many words as you like. It also has “Word XL” with six letters.
- The hint shows one letter in its right place. It costs 5 coins, which you collect while playing.
- With “Extra large”, the letters get bigger.
When does the new word come?
Every day at midnight, by the clock on your device. There is one word per day, the same for all players.
